Suddenly he woke up, talking to somebody in the supermarket. “How did I come here, and where is my stuff?” After a long correspondence with a fellow artist, the answers just seemed to get more and more vague. Haarlem, Brussel, Amsterdam. Inspired by the New York school, DADA, DIY culture, and advertisements, Youri creates an autobiographical story through cryptic shapes and an unconstrained painting and drawing technique. The burning house, being on the road, simultaneously flirting with big city life while longing for solitude. These conflicting topics interact in a completely new way through disconnected illustrative lines and graphic elements, referring to a place forever in motion. By applying, removing, covering and painting over illustrative building blocks, these elements combined take another dimension. Enhancing coincidences and oddities is an essential part of his process.
